Wuyi Mountain has been a symbol of the culture of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism since the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC), with the discovery and excavation of a series of exceptional archaeological sites. The area was home to the Ziyang Academy, which was established in the Song Dynasty (960-1279) by Zhu Xi and reflected Confucianism. The impressive stone carvings of ancient classical scriptures are also a highlight for the area.
The mountain was also the cradle of Neo-Confucianism, a doctrine that played a dominant role in the countries of East and Southeast Asia for many centuries, and influenced philosophy and government over much of the world.
Throughout history, many famous writers, poets, politicians and travelers have made works to praise the spectacular natural views of the mountain, as representing harmony between nature and human beings.
